Short Question

Why is it that people feel the need to visit a personal blog, and then comment that a word is misspelled or misused?

I’m not writing a professional novel or trying to sell something. I’m not a professional editor or proofreader. I’m writing off the top of my head, there’s very little editing involved before I unleash it upon the world, and I don’t care if my writing style is informal and incorrect.

So you know a word more intimately than I do. That’s great. I applaud literacy.

At least I don’t WrItE lIkE tHiS, or misuse apostrophes when a word is not possessive, and I certainly wouldn’t expect u 2 t0l3rat3 tipe lyke dis 4 long.

Go be perfect somewhere else. I like my mild clutter. ;) (OH NOEZ, I USED A SMILEY! SOMEBODY SMITE ME!)

Nicely said. It bugs me when people who obviously have nothing better to do decide to zero in on an inconsequential mistake I might have made while typing madly with a barking dog underfoot. I find that kind of response is typically the domain of the small-minded.

Interestingly, since I write for a living, I seem to get a lot more of that than I’d care to admit. It ’s mean-spirited, frankly, and it kinda misses the whole point of what we’re trying to accomplish here, namely be part of a neato online community that makes us think a little.

Which reminds me: I noticed a ginormous typo in the title of my most recent blog post (the second letter was capitalized as well as the firts…a common error when I’m typing fast and not paying much attention.) I hope the trolls don’t take me to task for THAT one, too :)
